Welcome to a brand-new year!
My last blog took a look back at the last year so it's perfect that this blog now looks to what we have planned for 2023! Our team at the Museum have a busy schedule of events planned for the year and I’m excited to see lots of visitors pass through our doors. Our calendar of public events kicks off on Sunday 12 February with our first Heritage Day of the year. The theme for this event is ladder, platform and aerial appliances. The two feature vehicles of this display day wil

Reflecting on the year that was 2022
Since taking up the position of Museum of Fire CEO in mid-2020 I have been pleased to see the Museum develop and grow in all areas. When we re-opened the Museum following the first COVID closure in early 2020 we had just two permanent staff and three casual weekend staff. Two and a half years later we now have a team of fifteen and our heritage arm continues to be the greatest beneficiary of that growth. How have we achieved this growth many ask? We haven’t found a magical go

Jumping Back in Time: 2002 & 2012
As we head towards the end of the year it is timely to look at back at some of the events that occurred in NSW firefighting history 10 and 20 years ago! The team recently shared some stories that sent me down memory lane so it seemed prudent to share them with our loyal blog readers! Top Stories of 2002 Like many Summers in Australia the year 2002 began with a series of devastating bushfires. From 24 December 2001 until 11 January 2002 a record number of appliances responded

A Spring Update from our CEO
HAPPY SPRING to all of the Museum's loyal supporters and visitors! This time last year we were contemplating exiting lockdown and wondering when life would get back to some type of normal, so it is great to see that one year on the public are really getting behind the museum and getting out to visit organisations such as ours that have been so severely impacted by the multiple closures. Let's start off this blog with one for all the Duke fans out there! The Museum's spotted m

Looking to the Future and the Past (1947)
It is that time of year when we begin looking to the next year to plan our events and activities. It may seem early to be looking towards 2023 but in order for the Museum to undertake any exhibition upgrades (potentially apply for grant funding for those upgrades) and prepare a schedule of events for the year we need to start looking at the calendar now. Over the course of August and into September our team will finalise almost all of our events and the projects on the agenda

Hear Us Now: On Being an Independent Museum
HEAR US NOW. This was the theme of the recent 2022 Australian Museum and Galleries Association Conference held in Perth, Western Australia. It was great to be able to attend this meeting of Museum-minded people from all types of organisations across the sector. These annual events are always a useful way to assess how we are progressing as an organisation in comparison to the rest of the industry and to learn about ways that we can tackle some of the biggest issues facing our

International Museum Day 2022 With Our CEO
Fittingly, this Wednesday is International Museum Day. Since 1977 ICOM, the International Council of Museums, has hosted this special Museum Day as a way to raise awareness of Museum’s as an important cultural repository and important tool for international cooperation and development of peace amongst all people. Last year, over 158 countries took part with different events from sharing online content to hosting events in the Museum space. This year, our team are busy plannin

When Flood Comes to the Museum of Fire...Again
I never thought a year on from the ’disastrous’ floods of 2021 that I’d be sitting down to write a blog about the ‘even more disastrous‘ floods of 2022! It was like 2021 was a dry run for what happened in 2022 (pardon the terrible pun)! In 2021, we faced something we hadn’t before and had to work out how to respond. This time we knew what to do, but we didn’t expect it to drag on as long as it did. Being the heritage partner of Fire and Rescue NSW, the Museum understands the

Catching Up With the CEO and Looking Back at 1922
Welcome to the latest instalment of the Museum’s blog series! This weekly snapshot from the Museum is a great way for us to keep our loyal supporters up to date with what is going on behind the scenes and promote some of our latest additions to the visitor experience or collection. At the same time, we’ve found that these blogs serve as an introduction to many new faces as they are drawn into our website by a specific topic and begin to explore what else we have to offer. For

Heading Into the New Year With Our CEO
Happy New Year and welcome to this, my first CEO blog of 2022! I feel like I’m becoming a broken record when I say this, but the year did not get off to the start we expected (as it didn’t last year either)! With COVID-19 cases rising, the Museum faced the same difficulties as most of the state including staff shortages and a decline in visitation as more people elected to stay home or were in isolation. Due to the situation we elected to postpone the awards ceremony for the
