Curator/Collection Manager

The successful applicant will be required to manage the museum’s collection, including:
• Conservation works (undertaking the necessary consultation where appropriate)
• Accession new items into the collection and conduct risk and significance assessments.
• Ensure all aspects of the collection are correctly imported into the new collection management software
• Conduct an audit of the collection
• With the guidance of the heritage, officer manage FRNSW and the museum’s archival collection
• Undertake any necessary deaccessioning in consultation with the CEO
• Ensure all items within the collection are correctly stored, photographed and labelled
• Contribute to the development of exhibitions and information for displays as directed by the CEO.
• Present education and public programs
• Supervise volunteers working on the Museum’s collections and as directed by the CEO
• Contribute to the protection and understanding of Fire & Firefighting cultural heritage
• When required provide historical research for the basis of identification, conservation and reconstruction of historical objects
• Provide information to communities and stakeholders as directed by the CEO; and develop positive links with FRNSW, community groups, and other stakeholders
• Manage and maintain the Museum’s social media platforms in conjunction with other staff (Facebook, Twitter and Instagram). This includes creating content (e.g. FlashbackFriday and museum activity updates) and monitoring online activity.
• Other duties as directed by the CEO.

Organisation Structure:
The Curator answers directly to the CEO and will be required to work closely with the Senior Heritage Officer to undertake tasks.

Application Advice:
The Museum is seeking a dynamic individual who is willing to work across all aspects of museum activities. A successful applicant will be friendly, approachable, flexible, have good communication skills and able to work in both a small and large team. The successful applicant will preferably have at least 5 years of collection management experience and/or several years’ experience working in a small museum (preferably not as a volunteer but as a paid staff member).

About the Organisation:
The Museum of Fire is a registered, not-for-profit charity in Penrith, NSW. The Museum’s collection is of national importance as it celebrates the heroic history of the Fire Brigade and Fire services in Australia. The Museum is a fun and interactive environment where children and adults of all ages can participate in Firefighting adventures and learn life skills as they experience what it is like to don the uniform and put your life on the line to save others. Many of the items from the Museum’s extensive heritage collection are listed on the State Heritage Register and it is the responsibility of the Museum to ensure their preservation and security. Museum Hours: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, Office Hours: 8:30 am – 5 pm

Location: 1 Museum Drive, Penrith. A short (~5min) walk from the north side of Penrith train station.
